The first time I saw this guy, I thought about Gregory Peck’s role as Captain Ahab in Moby Dick. The likeness is a bit startling and a fair bit comical. It’s rare to see men with facial hair in central China. It’s exceedingly rare to see a guy with a beard like the one in the photo. In fact, having facial hair is frowned upon in most of China. To be a presentable man is to be clean shaving. Strange how spitting all over the place isn’t considered part of being a presentable man. Oh well, every society has its revolting bits.
As a child, I used to watch a lot of kung fu movies from Hong Kong. In those martial arts classics, the men almost always had moustaches or beards or both. That almost no men in modern China grow their facial hair was a little disappointing to me, particularly because I don’t like to shave every day. Now I am used to always being clean shaven. Now when I see photos in the news of American men with their scruff, they look like recently domesticated cavemen.
