Located atop a grassy plateau in Junction City, Kansas, is a cannon measuring 42 feet in length and weighing 42,500 pounds. This massive piece of artillery was designed to propel nuclear munitions a distance of 20 miles. It’s an odd relic of military weaponry that was in service from 1952 to 1963. I wonder where and under what circumstances the US government would have used such a ghastly weapon. Fortunately this bad boy of military history was never used in battle.
I happened upon the cannon while driving east on I-70 through the pastoral lands of Kansas’ Flint Hills region. Spotting the massive artillery from the interstate, I turned my car around take a peek.
The cannon is located off exit 300 on the eastbound side of the interstate. There’s a footpath up the hill to the cannon. It’s worth a stop, if you’re passing through the area.
In addition to my pictures, I included a link to a US government video of one of these cannons being fired in the Nevada Desert. Good stuff.
