Stony Kill Falls the largest waterfall in the Gunks. It’s a great place to cool off on a hot day, since the falls makes its own weather. If you want to make a day of hiking to this location, start at the Awosting parking area in Minnewaska State Park.
Follow the Awosting Carriageway out past the small ranger cabin near Lake Awosting. Look for the unmarked path off to the right. While following the unmarked path, you will come to the Peters Kill. You must cross this stream to continue. Continue to follow the path all the way to the Stony Kill. There’s a nice swim hole there.
After checking out the Stony Kill, backtrack a couple of hundred feet along the carriageway to find the unmarked path on the left heading down slope through the woods and over rocks. The way down to the falls is somewhat treacherous. Take your time, and make sure you have adequate footing and hand holds.
All of these trails can be found on the NY/NJ Trails Conference Trail Map 104, Shawangunk Trails.
