I try to fit in traditional music and dance performances wherever I go. When staying in Hoi An, the place to go for a traditional performance was the cultural center located in the old town section of the city. The stage and theater room were small, assuring a good seat.
If it weren’t for tourism, I have a feeling traditional dance and music would die out in many places. The influence of western music is very powerful. Copy-cat reality TV singing competitions are all over Asia, and it’s not uncommon for the competitors to pick songs in English to perform. Popular western dance is extremely influential as well, which many young Asians have adopted and perfected. African American dance moves are particularly popular in Asia.
One could say that these are the natural progression of things, and that popular culture is meant to sweep the globe and go through its phases. But I say that the aesthetics, sounds, and techniques of traditional music and dance are something that we should always encourage to be preserved.
