I went to Xi’an during National Day Holiday, one of the worst times to travel in China. Even with the throngs of people there, I saw only a smattering of westerners. In many, many parts of China, foreigners are still a rarity. When I took this picture, I was standing on an esplanade above the children. They spotted me aiming my camera at them. I snapped their picture before their bewliderment faded and they looked away.
