Dancing at night is a common pastime for people all across China. People gather at parks, public squares, in front of business closed for the night, and at street corners to dance together. In China, this is called “square dancing” because groups of dancers often congregate at public squares. So the name has nothing to do with style of dance in the west called “square dancing.”
Nanjing Road Pedestrian Street is a stretch of foot-traffic only roadway in a touristy area of Shanghai. This pedestrian street is always busy with tourists wandering around, taking in the sites, and visiting the numerous shops. At night, some locals gather at the pedestrian street to dance. I filmed some of these dancers while on a short vacation in Shanghai.
