Chiloé Island is home to a number of impressive, old wooden churches. One of the biggest is the church of San Francisco in Castro, the capital city of Chiloé. The church was built in 1771 and faces Castro’s Plaza de Armas, its two tall steeples topped with a cross. As with other churches in Chiloé, the woodwork is incredible. The churches cavernous interior, with its many wooden arches, columns, and ornate trim, is a showcase of masterful carpentry. I can’t imagine how many hours of labor it took to create the church.
